1. Introduction: Capcom’s Mic Drop Moment

Last night at The Game Awards, the air was thick with anticipation for Rockstar Games. But roughly halfway through the show, the screen went black, and the static sound of a radio transmission cut through the noise.
"This is the last time, Hunnigan... I’m not coming back."
The crowd recognized the voice instantly. Resident Evil 9: Requiem is real, and it is coming for our nerves.
While Resident Evil 7 brought the series back to first-person horror and Village leaned into action-fantasy, Requiem seems to be aiming for something entirely different: a synthesis of tactical survival and open-world exploration. Let's break down why this might be the most ambitious Capcom project to date.

2. The Protagonist: The "Old Man Logan" Treatment

2.1. A Leon We Don't Recognize

The trailer gave us our first clear look at Leon S. Kennedy, and time has not been kind to him.
Based on the timeline (post-Shadows of Rose DLC), this game likely takes place around 2037, putting Leon in his late 50s.
He looks rugged. His signature curtains hairstyle is now streaked with gray. Deep crow's feet line his eyes, and he moves with a heaviness we haven't seen before. This isn't the backflipping superspy of Resident Evil 4, nor the drunk depressive of Vendetta. This is a man who has been fighting biological nightmares for 40 years and is tired. The "Requiem" subtitle (a mass for the dead) strongly suggests this is Leon's swan song.

2.2. Gear and Vulnerability

Interestingly, Leon isn't decked out in high-tech DSO armor. He’s wearing a tattered tactical vest over civilian clothes, covered in mud and blood.
He carries a modified handgun (resembling a heavy-caliber Silver Ghost) and a large machete-style combat knife. The focus on melee weaponry in the trailer suggests the Parry Mechanic from the RE4 Remake is returning, likely expanded to deal with environmental hazards in the open world.

3. The Setting: Welcome to "The Purple Island"

3.1. Southeast Asian Folk Horror

Capcom has taken us to the American Midwest (RE7) and Eastern Europe (RE8). Now, we are heading East.
The trailer showcases dense, humid jungles, ancient stone temples overgrown with roots, and coastal fishing villages on stilts. The architecture and vegetation strongly suggest a fictional island located in the South China Sea (near Singapore or Indonesia).
This setting allows Capcom to tap into a new brand of horror: Asian Folklore. We saw glimpses of shrines covered in red talismans and enemies that moved with jerky, unnatural motions reminiscent of the "Pontianak" or "Jiangshi" myths.

3.2. Color Theory

Visually, the game is striking. Gone are the gray/blue filters of Village. RE9 is bathed in deep purples, sickly greens, and blacks. The atmosphere feels suffocating and humid. You can almost feel the mosquitoes and the damp heat through the screen.

4. The Gameplay Revolution: The Open World Gamble

4.1. Defining "Open World Horror"

The biggest bombshell from industry insiders (confirmed by the sheer scale of the trailer) is that RE9 is Open World.
But don't expect Far Cry with zombies. Think closer to The Evil Within 2 or Days Gone, but tighter.
The map appears to be a large, interconnected island where you must scavenge for resources. The "Linear Corridor" design of the past is gone. If you see a lighthouse in the distance, you can go there—but you might run out of ammo on the way.

4.2. The Motorcycle

A brief shot showed Leon riding a dirt bike through a muddy trail. This confirms that vehicles will be used for traversal.
This introduces a new layer of tension: Fuel Management. Imagine running out of gas in the middle of a forest at night, hearing creatures closing in from the tree line. The vehicle likely serves as a mobile inventory box, similar to the car trunk in typical survival scenarios.

4.3. RE Engine Max

The game runs on the next iteration of Capcom’s proprietary tech, dubbed RE Engine Max.
The draw distances are massive. The trailer showed a seamless transition from an outdoor jungle into a dark cave system without a single loading hitch. The foliage density is particularly impressive, providing plenty of hiding spots for both Leon—and the things hunting him.

5. Combat & Enemies: The Hive Mind

5.1. Smarter Than Your Average Zombie

The enemies shown in the trailer (which the community is calling "The Afflicted") are terrifying. They aren't slow walkers. They are pack hunters.
In one sequence, Leon barricades a wooden hut, only for the enemies to rip through the thatched roof and crawl under the floorboards. They exhibit a "Hive Mind" intelligence, flanking the player and cutting off escape routes. This forces the player to use the open environment strategically—setting traps or leading them into choke points.

5.2. The Return of the Chainsaw

The trailer ended with a black screen and a single, distinct sound effect: the revving of a heavy-duty chainsaw engine.
Is it Dr. Salvador? Unlikely, given the new setting. It is more likely a spiritual successor—a Stalker-type enemy (like Mr. X or Nemesis) equipped with a chainsaw who roams the open world, hunting you down dynamically. The thought of hearing that engine sound while exploring a dark jungle is pure nightmare fuel.

6. Lore Implications: What is "Requiem"?

6.1. The Corruption of the BSAA

The ending of Resident Evil Village hinted that the BSAA (the organization Chris Redfield works for) had become corrupt, using bioweapons as soldiers.
It is highly probable that Leon is on this island to investigate a BSAA black site laboratory. This would pit Leon not just against monsters, but against the very organization that was supposed to protect the world. Could this lead to a final confrontation between Leon and a corrupt Chris Redfield?

6.2. The Winters Connection

With the time jump, Rose Winters is now an adult. While not shown in the trailer, it is possible she plays a role, perhaps as the "magical" element countering the biological horror, given her powers.

7. Release Date & Platforms

The trailer concluded with a simple "2027" release window.
This confirms the game is strictly "Next-Gen Only." It will launch on PlayStation 5 (and Pro), Xbox Series X, and PC.
There is no mention of PS4 or Xbox One, which allows the developers to push the fidelity of the open world without being held back by decade-old hardware.

8. Tekin Plus Verdict

Resident Evil 9: Requiem is taking a massive risk. Moving a tightly paced horror series into an Open World structure could dilute the fear—or it could evolve it into something far more terrifying.
With "Old Man Leon" at the helm and a setting that breathes claustrophobia despite its open nature, Capcom has our full attention.
